Instruction to create a bootable CD
Starting the BIOS-Update from CD-ROM

Today, there are many PCs and Laptops without any Floppy drive, but many users need to update their Hardware too. For this case i have wrote this short HowTo.

This example works best with Ahead's Nero (v6.0), because it supports creating bootable CDs. But you can use any other CD-Burning software, which supports creating bootable CDs too.

First, you need the Image file drdosmin.img, which contains a bootable DOS-Diskette. Our choice was the Freeware version from Caldera DR-DOS v7.03. Nowadays devicelogics, but commercial!

Download

  • bootbios.zip Ultimate BIOS-Boot-Edition (all-in-one: CD, Floppy, USB-Stick) 5.6MB
  • drdosmin.zip 82KB (Size decompressed = 1.474.560 Bytes)
contains the compressed File drdosmin.img, which must be decompressed with a Packer program like Winzip or Winrar before inserting on CD! The Image contains only the neccessary DOS systemfiles.
  • UltraISO (Trial Version)

Instruction to create a bootable CD

  • Install UltraISO's Trial-Version
  • Open the Image drdosmin.img with UltraISO
  • Choose the folder (see picture below), which contains your flash program and bios file (you have to download these files from the PC- or Mainboard manufacturer website!).
  • Drag&drop these 2 files into the main window (see red arrow)
  • Save (File/Save as) the modified Image under a new name as drdos.img and close UltraISO.

  • Start Nero, choose (1.) New Compilation and the CD-Format (2.) CD-ROM (Boot).
  • Open the Menu option (3.) Boot and insert the path (4.) to the Image file drdos.img (example C:\drdos.img).
  • Next click (5.) the New-Button.

  • Click the (6.) Burn-Icon to create the CD. Tip: use a rewriteable CD-RW!

Starting the BIOS-Update from CD-ROM

  • First, go into your BIOS-Setup and change the Bootsequence to CD-ROM, otherwise we can't boot from it (search for an menu entry like Bootsequence, First Boot Device, or something similarly).

  • Insert the CD and restart your PC. If all went well - Caldera-DOS starts and you can see the famous DOS-Prompt (A:\>).

  • Call your Flashprogram and start the Update, but remember: you can't backup your old BIOS Update onto CD! If your Harddisk has one FAT16- or FAT32-Partition, it would be a good idea to copy your 2 Updatefiles to this Partition and start the Update/Backup from there.

Happy flashing!
